How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds and Shades

Key takeaways

  • Measure width in three places and use the smallest for inside mounts.
  • Check the depth of the frame before choosing an inside mount.
  • Outside mounts need extra overlap for light control.
  • A professional measure avoids costly mistakes.

Inside mount measuring

For a blind that sits inside the window frame, measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest. Do the same for height, using the tallest measurement. Then check the depth of the frame, because the headrail needs a minimum depth to fit.

Windows are rarely perfectly square, so use a metal tape and write down the measurements to the nearest sixteenth of an inch.

Outside mount measuring

An outside mount sits on the wall or trim above the window. Measure the width and height of the area you want to cover, then add overlap on each side, commonly a few inches, so light does not leak around the edges.

Outside mounts are also useful when the frame is too shallow or you want a taller, grander look.

Why many people have us measure

A mistake of even a quarter inch can mean a blind that rubs the frame or lets in a gap of light. We measure every window on the free visit, note obstructions like handles and cranks and order exactly to size.

Quick answers

Should I measure the glass or the frame?

Measure the frame opening for inside mounts and the area to cover for outside mounts, not the glass alone.

Do I need to subtract from my measurement?

Not if you order from us. We handle the deductions and clearances for each product.
